Observe → record → ask → follow up
- Observe. Note what you actually examined. Leave room for uncertainty.
- Record. Add hive identity, date, conditions and anything you did not check.
- Ask. Share the evidence and colony history with your mentor or inspector.
- Follow up. Write the agreed next action separately from the observation.
This is an editorial note-taking framework, not a diagnosis or an instruction to open a hive.
Inspection questions
Where should a new beekeeper start?
Arrange practical tuition with a local association and ask about a mentor. Read the inspection sequence before using a checklist. BBKA getting started.
Does an empty “eggs” box mean the colony is queenless?
No. A blank record is ambiguous. Write “seen”, “not seen” or “not checked”, and say which frames you examined. See how to write a useful observation; ask your mentor to interpret it in context.
Should I work through every frame check in winter?
Routine full frame inspections are generally not the winter approach. Use the external winter-check guide and seek experienced advice about a specific concern. BBKA seasonal overview.
What should I record if I find queen cells?
Note their number, location and what you can see, plus eggs, brood and colony history. Do not choose a response from cell position alone. Read the queen-cell guide and get timely experienced advice.
Can the record tell me whether my colony is healthy?
No. It stores observations; it does not diagnose a colony or recommend treatment. For suspected brood disease, follow the official reporting routes.
Does the inspection record send my notes to you?
No. Optional saving stays in this browser on this device. Print or export important records; browser storage can be cleared. Avoid personal or sensitive information. Read the privacy notice.
