Hive inspection checklist (printable)
A simple field sequence for recording stores, space, brood, queen cells and concerns.
Before opening
- Choose a suitable time and prepare clothing, smoker, hive tool and record.
- Note date, hive identity and weather.
- Check that the site is clear and the entrance is not obstructed.
During the inspection
- Note colony strength and temperament without making a diagnosis.
- Check food stores and whether the colony has room.

- Look for queen cells and record their number and position. Do not destroy or manipulate them based on this checklist.
- Note unusual brood or adult-bee signs and seek NBU/inspector advice.
- Consider Varroa monitoring using current NBU guidance; this page gives no treatment instructions.
Close and record
- Return frames in order, close the hive and check the entrance.
- Record observations, actions and follow-up questions.
This checklist supports observation only. If you suspect American or European foulbrood, stop moving bees or equipment and contact the NBU promptly. NBU handling guidance · BBKA getting started.
Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
