Hive tools explained
A hive tool helps separate and lift parts; choose a shape compatible with your equipment and handle it carefully.
What it does
Propolis and wax can bind hive components together. A hive tool gives controlled leverage to separate parts and frames. Common designs include flat, J-shaped and combination tools; dimensions and ends vary. Choose a tool that suits your hive format and the way you have been taught to handle frames.
Keep the tool clean and in good condition. Work gently so you do not crush bees, damage comb or jerk a frame loose. Place removed parts on a stable, clean surface and keep track of where they came from. A hive tool is sharp or forceful enough to injure you if handled carelessly, so carry and store it safely.

Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
