Bee suits, jackets and veils explained
Compare garment coverage, fit, visibility and care needs without suggesting that clothing eliminates sting risk.
Start with coverage and fit
A full suit combines body coverage with a veil; a jacket covers the upper body and is usually paired with suitable lower-body clothing. A separate veil and hat may be another option. Design, materials, fastenings and veil styles vary by maker, so check the manufacturer’s specifications and care instructions.
Choose clothing that fits comfortably over the layers you will wear and allows you to bend, lift and handle frames without opening gaps. Check cuffs, zips and veil attachment before each inspection. Visibility and comfort matter because a beekeeper needs to work calmly and see frames clearly.
No garment eliminates sting risk. BBKA introductory guidance lists a beekeeper suit among minimum protective clothing and recommends wrist-covering gloves. Seek practical advice from a local association before buying. Product materials and features are manufacturer statements, not independent testing.
Checks before buying
- Try the movements you use at the hive: reach forward, bend and lift both arms. Check whether cuffs, ankles and waist stay covered.
- Check the veil gives a clear view and stays away from your face during those movements.
- Read how the veil attaches, how closures are secured and whether replacement parts are available.
- Check the washing instructions before choosing a garment; a suit you cannot keep clean is awkward for regular apiary use.
Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
