Bee smokers: preparation, use and fire safety

Prepare a smoker carefully, use cool smoke sparingly and follow fire-safety guidance and maker instructions.

Prepare safely

A smoker produces smoke from smouldering fuel. Use only suitable fuel and operate it outdoors, away from dry vegetation and combustible materials. Check local fire restrictions and the smoker maker’s instructions. Keep water or another appropriate means of extinguishing a fire nearby, and never leave a lit smoker unattended.

Light and maintain a small, controlled burn using the equipment instructions and an experienced beekeeper’s demonstration. Smoke should be cool before it reaches bees; hot sparks or embers must not be blown into a hive. Use the minimum needed to manage the inspection, rather than filling the colony with smoke.

When finished, fully extinguish the smoker and confirm it is cold before storage or transport. BBKA lists a smoker and fuel as basic equipment, and NBU handling guidance discusses calm frame examination. This is not a lighting recipe for every design; follow the manufacturer and mentor.

Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
